State of emergency ends in Newfoundland

The State of Emergency in central Newfoundland has ended.

Even though the fires remain out of control, air quality if expected to be favourable this weekend.

The Bay d’Espoir Highway is open but will continue to be reassessed. Motorists in the area are reminded that visibility may be reduced.

Forest resource roads along Bay d’Espoir Highway remain closed and cabin owners should refrain from entering the area.

Anyone in the area should vacate immediately as you are endangering yourselves and first responders.

The Canadian Red Cross shelter services established at the Hodder Memorial Centre in Deer Lake has also been suspended.

Individuals currently staying at the shelter in Deer Lake will be transported to Bishop’s Falls, Grand Falls-Windsor or Botwood.

If the need arises, shelter services and transportation will be re-established in a timely manner.
