Port aux Basques and Burnt Islands issue states of emergency
The communities of Port aux Basques and Burnt Islands have issued states of emergency as Fiona rages on sending waves and storm surge through communities on the southwest coast.
One person was sent to hospital after being swept into the ocean. Another woman remains missing.
The damage is unlike anything the area has ever experienced.
In Port aux Basques first responders are dealing with multiple electrical fires, residential flooding and washouts.
The RCMP is warning people to obey evacuation orders and to find a safe place to weather the storm. Police are also asking people to avoid travel along Route 480 (Burgeo Highway) at this time due to high winds.
