Northwest Territories continue to contend with wildfires
Several Northwest Territories communities have been evacuated due to wildfires. Across the territory, there are 238 total active fires. 3,432,090 hectares have been affected.
Warm and dry weather is continuing.
The Evacuee Income Disruption Support program provides financial support to adults 17+ whose employment has been disrupted by an evacuation lasting more than seven days. Eligible residents will receive a one-time payment of $750.
The territorial government will begin processing applications for residents by community. So far applications from Fort Smith, Enterprise, Jean Marie River, Hay River and Kátł’odeeche First Nation have been processed. On August 24, those from Yellowknife, Dettah, Ndılǫ and the Ingraham Trail will be processed, and Kakisa residents on August 25.
Minister of Indigenous Services Patty Hajdu said Tuesday morning that the federal government will provide financial support to Indigenous communities.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said, "I convened the Incident Response Group for another meeting today. We’ll keep making sure the provinces, territories, and communities affected have the support they need."
