Earthquake shakes New York City



There has been a 4.8 magnitude earthquake seven kilometres north of Whitehouse Station, New Jersey. It was at a depth of 4.7 km and was felt in New York City.


Earthquakes are rare in the area. There were reports of intense shaking that lasted up to 30 seconds.


There are no life-threatening situations or reports of any damage according to New York Gov. Kathy Hochul.


As a result of the earthquake, all flights to New York City, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Newark were being held.
