December Astronomy Highlights Include a Meteor Shower

This month, Venus will appear as the evening star from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Mercury will sit low in the southeastern sky during dawn until December 15.


On December 6, Jupiter will be positioned below the Moon and on the 7th, Jupiter will be at its brightest of the year.


The Geminid Meteor Shower takes place on December 13. Current showers produce up to 120 to 160 meteors per hour.

  • December 1: New Moon

  • December 8: First Quarter

  • December 15: Full Moon

  • December 22: Last Quarter

  • December 30: New Moon
