Daylight saving time begins tonight across most of Canada. at 2:00 a.m. local time clocks are turned ahead by one to 3:00 a.m. local time.

Several areas of Canada will not observe any time change. This includes Yukon, some areas in British Columbia, most of Saskatchewan, Southampton Island, and some locations in Québec east of 63° west longitude.

Daylight saving time was meant to make better use of the longer daylight available during summer so that darkness falls at a later clock time.

Canada adopted Daylight saving time for the first time during World War I as a measure to conserve fuel and energy. The idea was that by extending daylight hours in the evening, people would use less artificial lighting and save fuel for the war effort. At this time, the adoption of Daylight saving time was not uniform across Canada, and some provinces or territories did not implement it.

The debate over the benefits and drawbacks of Daylight saving time continues. Proponents argue that it helps conserve energy and promotes outdoor activities, while critics point to the disruption to people's sleep schedules, health risks, and the marginal energy savings.

Regardless, its also a good time to change your batteries in your smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors.
