Arctic showing rapid and pronounced warming
The Arctic Report Card for 2021 was released this past week and the report found rapid and pronounced warming is continuing to drive the evolution of the Arctic environment.
Additionally, disruptions, extreme events, and increasing variability throughout the Arctic are impacting the safety and well-being of communities not only near the Arctic but in faraway areas also.
The average surface air temperature over the Arctic for this past year from October 2020 to September 2021 was the 7th warmest on record.
This is the 8th consecutive year since 2014 that surface air temperatures were at least 1°C above the long-term average.
The Arctic continues to warm more than twice as fast as the rest of the globe.
