Social media lit up last Tuesday with many residents in eastern Kenya in awe at what locals called snow.

However, it wasn't snow but rather hail.

According to the Kenya Meteorological Department it was in fact hail that fell.

Snow is water vapor frozen into ice crystals and falling in light white flakes. Hail is pellets of frozen rain that fall in showers from cumulonimbus clouds.
