Today is Boxing Day... It is a holiday for most of us.

The origins of the day, however, a little more complicated then just a holiday.

We are not even sure why is it called Boxing Day.

There are a few theories...

  • In Britain a Christmas present is known as a ‘Christmas Box’.
  • In old times Boxing Day was a day off for servants. On December 26th servants would receive a  ‘Christmas Box’ from the master. They would then go home on Boxing Day to give ‘Christmas Boxes’ to their families.
  • A box to collect money for the poor was also placed in Churches on Christmas day and opened the next day - Boxing Day.
Boxing Day is typically a time to spend with family or friends, usually those not seen on Christmas Day itself.

Recently Boxing Day has become a day to get great discounts at stores.
