What can you do to prepare for an earthquake?

Several areas in Canada are prone to earthquakes. We take a look at what can you do to protect and prepare yourself and your family for an earthquake.

Everyone in your household should know how to turn off the water and electricity.

Tie the water heater to studs along with other heavy appliances  such as the stove, washer, and dryer.

Secure top-heavy furniture and shelving units to prevent tipping. Keep heavy items on lower shelves.

Earthquakes cannot be predicted. During an earthquake shaking can last several minutes. The ground or floor will move, perhaps violently. Windows may break, fire alarms and sprinkler systems may be activated, and lights and power may go off.
