For nearly 50 years’ scientists have seen the
West Antarctic ice sheet near total collapse. The ice sheet is a remnant of the
last ice age and is larger than Mexico.
The unsettling part is that a small amount of
global warming could cause it to fall to pieces. When it does so, it has the
potential to raise sea level by 3 metres or more. Due to climate change this
may play out in decades rather that centuries. With ice melting in other
regions, too, the total rise of the sea could reach five or six feet by 2100.
Major cities such as New York, Miami, New
Orleans, London, Venice, Shanghai, Hong Kong and Sydney will need to implement
measures of some sort.
