Waterton Lakes Fire Remains Out of Control

Posted by Kyle Brookings on Sunday, August 26, 2018

Those living in the townsite of Waterton Lakes need to be ready to leave at a moments notice. An evacuation alert is in effect.

This as a massive wildfire is burning just south of the Canadian Border.

While there was some rain in southern Alberta overnight Saturday, it fell north of Waterton Lakes National Park.

The Boundary Wildfire remains entirely in Glacier National Park, in the United States.

The fire is approximately 860 hectares and remains out of control. Parks Canada has deployed 2 helicopters, initial attack team, and a local incident management team.

Some more rain is expected today. About 5 to 10 mm is possible.

Parks Canada clsoed the entire park, including the backcountry campsites and hiking trails.

The prairies of Alberta meet the peaks of the Rocky Mountains in Waterton Lakes National Park.

The landscape was impacted by a wildfire in September 2017, resulting in areas of the park being closed to the public.
