Violent Hawk Near Calgary Stampede

Posted by on Friday, July 15, 2016

Cowboys and Cowgirls attending the Calgary Stampede should be glancing skyward after reports that a Swainson's hawk has been swooping down to attack people.

The hawk is a mother who is nesting nearby with two offspring near the Remington parking lot outside one of the entrances.

Organizers have posted warning signs around the area after a man had to receive medical treatment after the bird attacked him.

Swainson's hawk, is a large Buteo hawk of the Falconiformes, sometimes separated in the Accipitriformes like its relatives. This species was named after William Swainson, a British naturalist. The Swainson's hawk is a protected bird in Alberta.
