Updated Chris Forecast for Atlantic Canada

Posted by Kyle Brookings on Thursday, July 12, 2018

Chris has weakened to a tropical storm this morning with maximum sustained winds near 110 km/h with higher gusts.

Chris is expected to continue to weaken and will likely become a post-tropical cyclone later today.

Even though Chris is weakening, it is still expected to have an impact on our weather in Atlantic Canada.

Along the southern coasts of Nova Scotia and Newfoundland overnight and into Thursday swells could cause life-threatening surf and rip currents. Wave heights of 9 to as high as 11 meters are possible along the coast of Nova Scotia and Newfoundland.

The rain will begin across eastern Newfoundland this morning. Chris is expected to produce total rain accumulations of 25 to 75 millimeters over eastern and central Newfoundland.

Winds will gust to 100 km/h over the Avalon Thursday evening.

Impacts on Nova Scotia will only include swells, no land impacts are expected.
