The town of Bay de Verde  is under a state of emergency after fire erupted around 5:30 this morning at Quinlan fish plant.

Most of the tiny community of 398 have been evacuated due to toxic smoke that is billowing from the large structure.

At peak the plant employs 700 people. Fire crews from Bay Roberts, Carbonear, Harbour Grace, and Winterton are helping to battle the blaze but it still burns out of control.

Gusty winds are only increasing the already devastating situation. Crews have managed to depressurize a large ammonia tank inside the building.

The local school Tri-Con Elementary is open to people displaced by the fire.
