Update on Fort McMurray

Posted by on Wednesday, May 4, 2016

60,000 people were forced to flee their homes on Tuesday evening as a wildfire that has been burning for days got out of control and forced the entire city of Fort McMurray to be evacuated.

Those who fled in the final hours faced gridlock on Highway 63, and  filled up oilsands work camps, where beds and meals were offered.

No buildings were lost in the city's downtown area, Allen said. Despite the devastation, there were no reports of deaths or serious injuries.

At 10:30 Tuesday night the neighbourhoods of Abasand, Wood Buffalo, Dickensfield, and Waterways saw only some damage.

Sadly today will be just as bad as hot and dry weather with moderate winds are expected to continue.

Fort McMurray's only hospital, the Northern Lights Regional Health Centre, was evacuated.

Highway 63 and Highway 881 to Fort McMurray has been closed to all non-essential travel.
