Unsettled Weekend for NL

Posted by on Thursday, December 17, 2015

There are special weather statements up the West coast of Newfoundland and for the Northern Peninsula East, also for many parts of Labrador. There is also a Wreckhouse wind warning in effect for Channel-Port aux Basques and vicinity.

Easterly winds are forecast to strengthen on Friday, with coastal gusts potentially approaching 100 km/h, except 120 km/h in the Wreckhouse area Friday afternoon. Also as the low pushes offshore on Saturday night strong winds will prevail over the province.

By the end of the weekend most areas of Newfoundland will pick up about 5 to 10 cm of snow. However rain will be the big story. Along the south coast 30 mm of rain is possible in the highest accumulations, about 10 to 20 mm for the Avalon, and 5 to 10 mm for the remainder of the Island.

Some freezing rain is also possible for some areas of the west coast Friday evening.

In Labrador 15 to as much as 20 cm is possible.
