Trump Looking to Cut Weather Funding

The United States lags behind the European weather model. The European model simply does a more accurate job than the U.S. Global Forecast System.

That could get worse if the White House gets its way.

The White House’s budget proposal suggested cutting 26 percent from NOAA’s Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Research.

It doesn't stop there. There is also a proposal to cut $513 million from NOAA’s satellite division.

National Weather Service officials admit they have fallen behind. They’ve been making upgrades in the complexity and resolution of their forecast model. The new forecast model, called FV3, is expected by early 2019.
