At one point the United Nations named Mexico City "the most polluted city on the planet." Now the government has decided to do something about it. Although currently Mexico City ranks at about the same level as Los Angeles.

Between April 5 and June 30 residents will be forced to comply with a driving ban one day a week in an effort to improve air quality. In the past cars that were 8 years or older were forced off the roads one day a week.

The city issued a smog phase 1 emergency for ozone - the second highest alert level.

Mexico City has an elevation of 2,250 m and a population of 8.851 million.
