Posted by on Monday, October 3, 2016

It was on October 3, 1841 that several fishermen died on what is known as the October Gale.

At least 190 boats were destroyed and in one day after the storm, 100 bodies were buried.

On October 2 the wind picked up and then came heavy rain and The Green Mountains of Vermont and the White Mountains of New Hampshire were covered in snow.

Locals reported the ocean took vessels and threw them onto the shore.

In Cape Cod the beach from Chatham to the highlands was covered in wrecked boats.

Damage is estimated to be around $55.6 million today.
