State of Emergency Declared in Corner Brook

Corner Brook is under a state of emergency.

The Town of Humber Arm South has  declared a state of emergency.

At this hour several roads are closed.

Access into and out of the city is suspended.

The City is advising residents to stay home.

All personnel are out trying to deal with the overwhelming snow melt and heavy rainfall.

The Department of Transport and Works is escorting traffic through one bypass lane near Little Rapids, which washed out earlier today.

Most highways on the west coast are either closed or you are advised to stay off.

Western Health has activated their Medical Communications Centre. For non-emergency medical transport in the Western Health region, call the medical communications centre at 637-5035. For emergencies, call 911. The Air Ambulance is on standby.

The Provincial Government has been working hard with emergency management partners to coordinate response efforts and ensure public safety in light of the heavy rains and flooding affecting roads and municipal infrastructure on the west coast of the island.

Transportation and Works officials, engineers and contractors are on site throughout the region assessing damage, making repairs and determining alternate routes where necessary.

The City of Corner Brook held a press conference at 7:00 pm.
  • Corner Brook Mayor Jim Parsons says that Public Works Building is extensively damaged. May not be able to be repaired.
  • Damage in Corner Brook is in the millions.
  • Water pipes are in danger or freezing.
