Rome's metro system was shut down and several buildings were evacuated on Wednesday following several powerful earthquakes.

The USGS reported a 5.3-magnitude earthquake 7 kilometers west-northwest of Amatrice.

The earthquake struck 90 kilometers northeast of Rome, however it was strongly felt.

So far there have been nine aftershocks.

Amatrice was devastated by powerful earthquakes last year.
