On Saturday, two tornado-related fatalities broke a record long streak for the amount of days without tornado deaths.

The National Weather Service confirmed that an EF-2 tornado ended the life of a 79 year old woman Saturday afternoon in Logan County, Kentucky, which marks the first U.S tornado death since May 16, 2017.  This was a 283-day long streak that sadly ended yesterday.

The 2nd longest known record was 220 days, dating back to mid 2012, lasting through January 2013.

Better warnings, better lead times, better understanding, better knowledge, and sheer luck are the main factors as to why the streak lasted so long.  Hopefully, a new and hopefully longer streak begins today.

However, severe weather appears likely on Wednesday, which could bring damaging winds and tornadoes to the Deep South.
