Rare Tropical Storm Forms off the Coast of Brazil

Posted by Kyle Brookings on Monday, March 25, 2019

A tropical storm has formed just northeast of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

If you think it is weird for a tropical storm to form in that area, you're right.

The last time a tropical storm formed in the area was almost a decade ago.

The storm is named Iba and is showing mainly a cluster of thunderstorms rotating clock-wise. It is in the Southern Hemisphere, so low pressure systems spin clockwise.

It is so rare for a tropical storm to form in the southern Atlantic Ocean because the environment is not conducive for development. The topography and ocean currents of Eastern South America are also not friendly for any systems of a tropical nature.
