Authorities in the Russian region of the Novaya Zemlya islands have declared a state of emergency after several polar bears have been seen in the area.

The polar bears have been spotted in human areas. The bears have been attacking people and entering buildings and homes.

The bears no longer fear police patrols and signals so more drastic measures are needed.

Polar bears are listed as endangered in Russia and as a result, they cannot be hunted.

Scientists have long warned that polar bears are being impacted by climate change and are forced on to land to look for food.
