Polar Bear Shot Dead During Arctic Cruise

The MS Bremen, a cruise ship, docked in Svalbard, an area popular with tourists in cruise ships in the Arctic. The area is known for glaciers and wildlife.

When two polar bear guards went on the Island one was attacked by a polar bear and suffered a head injury. The other polar bear guard shot the bear in an act of self-defence.

The Joint Rescue Coordination Centre of Northern Norway said that crew member was taken by helicopter to the town of Longyearbyen.

All cruise ships travelling in the northern region are obliged to have polar bear guards on board.

MS Bremen, is a cruise ship operated by Hapag Lloyd since 1993. She was built as Frontier Spirit at the Mitsubishi Shipyard, Kobe, Japan, in 1990.
