Plane Forced to Land After Getting Struck by Hail

An American Airlines plane was forced to make an emergency landing on Sunday night in El Paso, Texas, after getting struck by hail.

Hail damaged the windshield of the plane and some passengers reported feeling sick.

At the time there were 130 passengers and five crew members.

Another plane was used to finish the trip to Phoenix.

Hail doesn’t just come out of the bottom of clouds but can be ejected from the top of some larger storms.

Hail forms when thunderstorm updrafts are strong enough to carry water droplets well above the freezing level. This freezing process forms a hailstone, which can grow as additional water freezes onto it.
