Plane Crash Lands in Stephenville

There were some tense moments aboard a Provincial Airlines flight this afternoon.

The Dash 8 aircraft crash-landed at the Stephenville Airport when the landing gear failed.

None of 51 passengers and crew were injured.

The flight originated from Wabush.

Originally the plane was to land in Deer Lake before flying to St. John's.

The decision to land in Stephenville was because of severe weather.

When an aircraft is unable to touch down with its landing gear fully extended it must perform a gear-up or “belly” landing. Such a landing does carry a small risk - there is likely to be damage to the aircraft; it could conceivably catch fire or flip over if it lands too hard.
