NWS to Issue New Type of Warning

Posted by on Saturday, October 28, 2017

Several National Weather Service offices will begin to issue snow squall warnings this winter.

The warnings by the U.S. National Weather Service will be issued by all of the Lower 48 states starting in early January.

A snowsquall is a sudden moderately heavy snow fall with blowing snow and strong, gusty surface winds.

Environment Canada already issues snow squall watches and warnings.

Warnings are issued by Environment Canada when there is a brief period (less than one hour) of very poor visibility (400 m or less), caused by heavy snow and blowing snow, and accompanied by strong, gusty winds of 45 km/h or greater, is expected to occur with the passage of a cold front.
