Polytechnic State University in California has been forced to close a residence hall and evacuate students after a mudslide pushed mud and debris into the building's study room.

Officials say that the dorm will have to close for the remainder of the academic year.

There was unstable soil noticed along the hillside and trees immediately behind Fremont Hall, according to a release from the university.

Heavy rainfall is the reason for the mudslide.
