Measuring Rainfall

Posted by on Monday, September 19, 2016

Most standard rain gauges have a wide funnel leading into the cylinder.

The funnel is 10 times the cross-sectional area of the tube. Rainfall as low as .2 mm can be measured with this instrument.

To ensure proper measurements mount the rain gauge in open areas and strive to be twice as far from obstacles as they are high.

The device should also be about half a meter off the ground.
