Maria Devastates Dominica

Hurricane Maria made landfall in Dominica as a Category 5 hurricane.

Maria caused severe damage. Roofs were blown off houses, including that of Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit.

Strong winds and rain lashed mountainous Dominica for hours. 

Already 70,000 people were without power following their earlier brush with Irma and nearly 200 remained in shelters as Maria approached.

Maria was the first hurricane on record to make landfall on the island at Category 5 intensity.

Maria is is currently threatening the Leeward Islands, Puerto Rico, and the Dominican Republic.
