Manitoba Communities Declare State of Emergency Amid Flooding

Posted by on Monday, April 3, 2017

So far seven communities in Manitoba have declared a state of emergency.

The communities of Grassland, Grey, Swan River, Carman, Two Borders, Dufferin and La Broquerie have all declared states of emergency as the spring thaw continues to melt snow and rivers begin to rise.

The Red River Floodway and the Portage Diversion were activated late last week.

The Red River is almost 6 metres above normal winter levels.

25 properties south of the City of Winnipeg will require sandbag protection.

Major floods in historic times include those of 1826, 1897, 1950, 1997, 2009, 2011, and there has been significant flooding many years in between.
