A bystander took it upon himself to smash a car window to save a dog from sweltering heat in Grand Bend, Ontario on Saturday.

People say that the animal was in distress as the temperature soared to 20 degrees. They said that the dog was completely soaked.

The owners didn't show up for another 50 minutes. When they did arrive they were confused.

Police asked the dog owner to go to the police station. It is not confirmed whether charges had been laid.

Penalties include possible jail time, a lifetime ban against owning animals and up to $60,000 in fines.
