Magnetic North Just Changed

Posted by Kyle Brookings on Wednesday, February 6, 2019

The magnetic north has been updated to reflect the changes over the past five years.

While the magnetic north is constantly moving, scientists noticed something unusual: Magnetic north's normal movement has unexpectedly accelerated across the Northern Hemisphere.

No one knows why.

The change may impact the GPS system on cell phones, ships, and airlines.

The World Magnetic Model update was officially released on Monday, and magnetic north can again be precisely located for people around the world.

It is moved away from Canada and much closer to Russia.
