An area of low pressure is set to intensify south of Newfoundland on Saturday.

Based on its current track the low is expected to deliver some snow to the Avalon and south coast beginning on Saturday afternoon.

This could be the first significant snowfall of the season.

The centre of the low will pass just south of the southeastern Avalon Peninsula.

The line between rain and snow is very fine and a slight shift in the track could alter snowfall amounts considerably.

Snowfall Forecast:
  • St. John's 20 to 40 cm
  • Carbonear 15 to 30 cm
  • Trepassey 15 to 30 cm
  • Placentia 15 to 30 cm
  • Marystown 10 to 15 cm
  • Clarenville 10 to 15 cm
  • Gander 5 to 10 cm
