Lightning Fatalities and Safety Tips

It is estimated that each year on average in Canada, there are between nine and ten lightning-related deaths and up to 164 lightning-related injuries.

Most of the lightning-related fatalities and injuries in Canada occur in Ontario and happen between June and August.

One estimate is that 24,000 people are killed by lightning strikes around the world each year and about 240,000 are injured. Another estimate is that the annual global death toll is 6,000.

Thunderstorm Safety Tips:
  • Move to a sturdy building or car.
  • Do Not take shelter under isolated trees.
  • Get out of boats and away from water.
  • Unplug appliances. Avoid using the telephone or any electrical appliances. 
  • Do not take a bath or shower.
  • Remember when thunder roars go indoors!
