Large Asteroid Will Fly By Earth

Earth will have a close encounter with an asteroid on April 19th.

Asteroid 2014 JO25 measures 823 meters in diameter and will pass 4.57 lunar distances (1.8 million km) from Earth. This will be the closest than it ever has within the last 400 years.

NASA says that the asteroid will not hit Earth this time. However, the Minor Planet Center has classified it as a “potentially hazardous asteroid”.

It is large enough to cause significant regional damage if it were to make impact.

NASA also says that anything more then two kilometers long could have worldwide effects.

2014 JO25 was first spotted by the Mount Lemmon Survey in Arizona in 2014.
