Spectators around the world experienced king tide's this week.

Although not a scientific term, king tide's occur multiple times in a year and features the highest high tides of the year.
King tides are simply the very highest tides.

They are naturally occurring, predictable events.

Tides are the movement of water across Earth's surface caused by the combined effects of the gravitational forces exerted by the Moon, Sun, and the rotation of Earth which manifest in the local rise and fall of sea levels.

Higher than normal tides typically occur during a new or full moon and when the Earth is at its perigee, or during specific seasons around the country.

The event is especially noticeable in Florida. It is causing flooding and the inundation of low-lying areas.

Flooding from king tide's have increased 300-925 percent on the U.S. Atlantic, Pacific and Gulf Coasts since the 1960s.
