Japanese Island Disappears

A Japanese island has disappeared and the Japanese Coast Guard is searching for it.

Esanbehanakitakojima, an uninhabited islet off the northern coast of the country, disappeared and no one is sure why.

Under international law a country can only claim waters around islands that are visible above the sea surface at high tide.

In 1987 Esanbehanakitakojima was recorded as 1.4 meters above sea level.

If Esanbehanakitakojima has sunk beneath the waves, Japan will lose 500 meters of territorial waters.
