Iceberg the Size of PEI Is Breaking from Antarctica

Posted by on Sunday, January 8, 2017

An iceberg in the Antarctica that is about the same size as Prince Edward Island is about to break off and into the sea.

The Larsen C iceberg has been breaking from Antarctica for decades but it is now moving more quickly in the recent months.

There is only about 20 km of unbroken ice remained and calving is considered to be a certainty sometime this year.

Larsen C is the fourth largest ice shelf in Antarctica.

After breaking away from Antarctica, it will leave the remainder of the shelf vulnerable to future collapse. If all the ice that the Larsen C shelf currently holds back were to enter the sea, it is estimated that global waters would rise by 10 cm.
