Ice Shelf The Size of PEI Breaks Off

NASA's Aqua MODIS satellite has captured one of the largest icebergs ever break off from Antarctica.

The ice is nearly 6000 square kilometres and 200 metres thick. That's about the size of Prince Edward Island.

The ice broke off sometime between Monday and Wednesday.

The Larsen Ice Shelf is a long, fringing ice shelf in the northwest part of the Weddell Sea, extending along the east coast of the Antarctic Peninsula from Cape Longing to the area just southward of Hearst Island.

Scientists have long feared that the iceberg would break from the Larsen C ice shelf due to climate change.
