It has been hot in Phoenix, Arizona with temperatures soaring into the high 40 across the area.

It has been so hot that it was too dangerous for planes to take off.

More than 40 flights have been cancelled. Most cancelled flights were on Bombardier CRJ airliners, which have a maximum operating temperature of about 48.

Larger aircraft's were not impacted.

The reason that planes cannot fly in extremely hot weather is because when it is really hot the air is less dense meaning that it is thinner.

As a result the wings of a plane may not get enough lift to take off.
