History of Ice Hockey

The term Hockey was first mentioned in the 1773 book Juvenile Sports and Pastimes, to Which Are Prefixed, Memoirs of the Author: Including a New Mode of Infant Education, by Richard Johnson.

No place in Canada is there written evidence of the game being played any earlier, and since hockey developed from hurley on ice in Nova Scotia. There is a claim that Windsor, Nova Scotia to the birthplace of hockey.

On March 3, 1875, the first organized indoor game was played at Montreal's Victoria Skating Rink between two nine-player teams.

Ice hockey is the official national winter sport of Canada.
