Highway Reopens After Snow Closes it for 5 Months

Posted by on Monday, May 15, 2017

Srinagar-Leh Highway located in India has reopened after being shut down for five months of snow.

Parts of National Highway 1 run through some extremely treacherous terrain and shut-offs because of avalanches or landslides are common in Winter months.

In some areas there were 7-metre snowdrifts.

Currently only light traffic is permitted on the road.

Officials will soon decide whether or not heavy vehicles will be allowed to travel along the highway in coming days.
