Giant Puffball Found

Posted by Carole Chantler on Tuesday, September 6, 2016

A mushroom picker from Ontario found a puffball that weighed 15.4 pounds and had a diameter of 50 cm.

Considered a delicacy by some in Southwestern Ontario, giant puffball mushrooms are prized by some.

A puffball is a member of any of several groups of fungi in the division Basidiomycota. The puffballs were previously treated as a taxonomic group called the Gasteromycetes or Gasteromycetidae, but they are now known to be a polyphyletic assemblage.

He discovered it while walking his daughter's dog.
