As Erica approaches Florida governor Rick Scott has declared a state of emergency.

So far Erica has left up to 20 people dead on the island of Dominica, the storm is set to make land-fall in Florida by Monday.

Other Caribbean islands have battened down the hatches, as strong winds and rain wreak havoc.

Governor Scott said that the storm poses "a severe threat to the entire state" and ordered the activation of the National Guard and other emergency teams.

If there is some good news its that Erica is no longer to reach hurricane force as originally feared. However Miami may still see winds near 100 km/h.

In Puerto Rico, around 200,000 people remained without power but Erika spared the island any significant damage as it made land-fall on Friday.
