At least 17 people are dead and four are missing after flooding in south-eastern France.

Power was also knocked out for thousands prompting French President Francois Hollande declared a state of natural disaster for the areas affected.

Violent storms ripped through the region on Saturday sweeping away cars and dropping 180 mm of rain in some cities, including Cannes.

Cannes received around two months worth of rain over several hours, a rarity for a part of France famous for its mild climate.
