Suncor has told employees that they are shutting down production in Fort McMurray.

Specialists are being called in to assist in the shutdown.

Management was informed this morning of the decision. Workers are being told to go home.

Suncor has already demobilized non-critical staff to ensure that sufficient space is available for employees, their families and other Fort McMurray residents at their camps.

Suncor has conducted an orderly shutdown of its base plant operations.

Suncor's Nicole Fisher told us that, "the plant will not close for 6 months" and "it is too early for timing" she also added that "safety is their top priority."

Suncor Energy is a Canadian integrated energy company based in Calgary, Alberta. It specializes in production of synthetic crude from oil sands.

NOTE: An earlier version of this story stated "One employee who spoke on the condition of anonymity says that he was told that he will be out of work for at least six months."
