Escaping Fort McMurray

Kim Sooley was one of the thousands forced from their homes due to the Fort McMurray wildfire. She said around 3:30 pm on Sunday she could see the fire from her home. She packed some clothing and took her pictures. Just as she was about to leave the power went out and she heard the evacuation order on the local radio.

Traffic was chaotic. As she was driving out of town she heard explosions and saw fire shooting up into the air. She traveled along Highway 63 to Athabasca.

She was told that her house is still standing, she is unaware if there is any damage.

Sooley is currently in Grande Prairie and staying with friends. She wants to thank them. They provided her with an RV. She has received Walmart gift cards to buy food and clothing from the Canadian Red Cross. She also said she will need to travel to Edmonton to receive a federal check.

Despite the devastation that awaits her back in Fort McMurray, the Grand Falls-Windsor native does plan to return to Fort McMurray when evacuees are permitted to return.
